ENRight now is the best time to plant a fruit tree

ENIf you've been thinking about planting a fruit tree "eventually," this is the moment I'd actually do it, not next spring.

ENMost people assume spring is the natural time to plant anything. For fruit trees and shrubs, it's actually the second-best option. Autumn, roughly October to November, is the best planting window of the whole year, and the reason is simple: the soil is still warm from summer, while the air above it is cooling down. That combination lets roots settle in and establish all through the mild autumn weeks, with no leaves to support and no summer heat to stress them. By the time spring arrives, an autumn-planted tree already has a head start, a root system actively growing, months before a spring-planted tree even gets going.

ENWhy it actually matters

A tree planted in October leans on autumn and winter rain to establish. One planted in spring has to be watered carefully through its first summer while it's still trying to root.

EN• A head start by next year. Roots keep developing underground right through winter, even once the tree looks dormant above ground. Spring growth then starts from an already-settled base.

Many nurseries sell fruit trees bare-root (no pot, no soil) only in autumn and winter, usually the cheapest and healthiest way to buy a tree, with a far wider choice of varieties than you'll find potted in spring.

DEDu brauchst keinen Garten, geschweige denn eine Streuobstwiese

ENYou don't need a garden, let alone an orchard

FRPas besoin d'un jardin, encore moins d'un verger

ENThis is the part people underestimate most. Nurseries graft the fruiting variety onto a rootstock that controls how big the tree ultimately grows, which is what makes small-space growing genuinely possible:

EN• Dwarf trees (look for rootstock codes like M9 or M27 on apples, or Quince on pears) stay around 1.5–3 m tall and can fruit a year or two earlier than full-size trees.

EN• Columnar ("Säulenobst") trees grow as a single narrow stem under half a metre wide, compact enough for a large pot on a balcony.

EN• Berry bushes, currants, gooseberries, need even less space and are about as low-maintenance as fruit growing gets.

ENA single well-chosen tree or shrub, planted once, keeps producing for 15–25+ years. Very little else you plant pays back that long for one afternoon of digging.

ENBefore you buy

FRAvant d'acheter

ENA few quick things worth checking at the nursery or garden centre. And if you don't have a good garden centre nearby, you can also buy your tree online, Baumschule Horstmann ships bare-root and potted fruit trees across Germany.

EN1. Rootstock / mature size, ask specifically if you want to stay small; "fruit tree" alone tells you nothing about final size.

FR1.

EN2. Self-fertile or not, some apple, pear, sweet cherry, and plum varieties need a second compatible tree nearby to fruit at all (even a neighbour's tree can count). Look for "self-fertile" (selbstfruchtbar) if you've only got room for one.

FR2.

EN3. Bare-root vs. container, bare-root is cheaper and plants beautifully right now; container-grown can go in almost any time but costs more.

FR3.

ENThat's really it

ENDig a hole roughly twice the width of the roots, keep the graft union (the knobby bump near the base of the trunk) a few centimetres above soil level, water it in well, and let autumn do the rest.
